]]> I haven’t written poetry in quite a few years. I was feeling very emotional while watching Rising Son The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi earlier today. I never knew it when I met him briefly while filming him at a skate contest a few years ago, but I identified with him a lot through his documentary. Being half Asian myself I feel that we share that same dynamic — the dynamic of coming from two completely separate cultures and dealing with the culture shock of identity. When you see Christian Hosoi skate, you can feel the passion. It is what he does and he does it best because of the passion he has for skateboarding. Skating is very creative and artistic, I feel that we also have this in common. His father was an artist and guitar player, both of my parents are artists. I felt like writing an entry after watching it, but it soon turned poetic. So without further ado here is the poem I wrote — unedited and quite rough.

What is passion? Where has it gone?
Creative, artistic, bundled into one.
Full of desires can’t be undone.
What has life really become?

Passion is what bounds cannot define,
Like a spring that unwinds.
Like a mute who sings,
Like a canary without wings.

Passion can set you free,
No matter who you are,
Or who you want to be.
Passion sees no past.

Passion passes no judgment,
It has no conscience.
It is a drug of feeling,
And stems from love.

Passion can be tender,
Passion can be violent.
Like the sunshine,
Or like a torrent.

Passion is in your soul,
It is in your heart.
It has no end,
It has no start.

]]> I feel that when I am in Santa Cruz, time moves slower. I take time to see things normally overlooked – I notice more, I actually listen to what my mind is saying. The aura of this city is of relaxation and free thought; I think this may be one of the reasons why some of my best ideas came from my time in college.

I had the opportunity to meet Angie’s family this week. Chatted briefly with her family on her graduation day and quite a bit the next day in Vacaville at breakfast (which was delicious – her mom is one serious cook). Angie has a wonderfully beautiful family — my experience, sprinkled with a little Spanglish and a heap of Spanish, made me realize where Angie comes from; it gives me a deeper understanding of her existence in my life. In turn, it helps me understand myself – why I do what I do, why I am who I have become. The experience has been a real eye-opener, an important life-learning for me because I have found what makes me happy and I hope to continue to smile in my voyage into the unforeseeable future.
