How do I know it’s working?

I wonder what the underlying message of this video is. To me the beginning = a kit to build this giant thing = someone has done it before; been there, done that, here’s how. And this big, giant thing is a testament to your work or how you occupy your time. But eventually work (and time) ultimately consumes you as you consumed it in the past. And when things aren’t working out, destruction is your only option; yet you still are consumed. Eaten by culture, nature, the city, and most of all: other people; cannibalistic.

Scott Joplin (ca. 1867-1868? – April 1, 1917) was an American composer and pianist. Joplin achieved fame for his ragtimecompositions, and was later dubbed “The King of Ragtime”. During his brief career, Joplin wrote 44 original ragtime pieces, one ragtime ballet, and two operas. One of his first pieces, the Maple Leaf Rag, became ragtime’s first and most influential hit, and has been recognized as the archetypal rag.

Joplin was born into a musical African American family of laborers in Northeast Texas, and developed his musical knowledge with the help of local teachers. During the late 1880s he travelled around the American South as an itinerant musician, and went to Chicago for the World’s Fair of 1893 which played a major part in making ragtime a national craze by 1897.

Publication of his Maple Leaf Rag in 1899 brought him fame and had a profound influence on subsequent writers of ragtime. It also brought the composer a steady income for life. During his lifetime, Joplin did not reach this level of success again and frequently had financial problems, which contributed to the loss of his first opera, A Guest of Honor. He continued to write ragtime compositions, and moved to New York in 1907. He attempted to go beyond the limitations of the musical form which made him famous, without much monetary success. His second opera, Treemonisha, was not received well at its partially staged performance in 1915. He died from complications of tertiary syphilis in 1917.

Joplin’s music was rediscovered and returned to popularity in the early 1970s with the release of a million-selling album of Joplin’s rags recorded by Joshua Rifkin, followed by the Academy Award–winning movie The Sting which featured several of his compositions, such as “The Entertainer“. The opera Treemonisha was finally produced in full to wide acclaim in 1972. In 1976, Joplin was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer Prize.

First, I have to give credit to my great friend, Jason (@JasonKTFO), for showing me this new track by Justice, called Helix. I first fell in love with Justice’s music on the album Cross † and their live album A Cross the Universe. I had the pleasure of seeing them last year on Halloween at the HARD Haunted Mansion. I am elated to hear they will be releasing some new music in the up and coming months.

Busy P does Busy Pictionary

For those that don’t already know who Pedro Winter is; he is known as Busy P, electrohouse DJ, producer, manager and Ed Banger Records owner. He is currently well known for the management of the French-Juggernaut, super-duo Justice, but also manages artists Cassius, SebastiAn, Uffie, DJ Mehdi, Mr Oizo, and Breakbot to just name a few. He is best known for managing the heavy-weight, super-producer, French-master-wizard DJ duo Daft Punk from 1996 to 2008.

As some of you may already know, I will be attending HARD Summer Music Festival 2011 at L.A. Historic State Park this August. Busy P will playing under the moniker Busy Pictionary – to which I am very excited about.

“We’re calling it the Busy Pictionary show and this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Busy P said of the planned sets. “I will bring So-Me on stage with me and we will plug in his computer while I’m DJing so he can react live to the music I play and what the crowd do. He’ll be drawing, photographing and doing some more stuff that I can’t tell you about now and translating that feeling and the energy onto the screen.”

As excited I am to see his set, I am equally excited to see what So-Me has in store for us — I’m not even sure So-Me knows what he will draw, which is even more tantalizing and a bit titillating, I must say.

I guess this is the space where I will ‘put-out’ and give you something to jam to while you contemplate Busy P and all that surrounds the electronic-music-guru and king of French electronic music networking.
